河南洛阳1942年的老照片
电影《一九四二》，2012年11月29日在中国内地上映。该片获得了第32届香港电影金像奖最佳两岸华语电影、第3届北京国际电影节天坛奖最佳影片等奖项。影片以1942年河南大旱，千百万民众离乡背井、外出逃荒的历史事件为背景展开。河南大饥荒一般指的是1942年7月开始到1943年春发生在河南的旱灾。平息大旱之后，又遇蝗灾。且由于河南地处前线，又有下级瞒报、政策失误、交通堵塞等原因，最终导致饥荒遍及全省110个县，根据现有的材料显示，全省111个县中有96个县受灾。其中灾情严重的有39个县，受灾总人数达1200万人。美国《时代周刊》记者白修德对灾情的报道：
中国的麻烦简直持续不断，中国痛苦的历史更是循环反复地出现着战争、洪灾、饥荒。他报道说：我的笔记告诉我，我只是在报道我所见到的、所证实的事实，甚至至今我还难以相信它们是真的：狗在路边啃人的尸体，农民趁夜色降临后寻找人肉，荒芜的村庄望不到边，乞丐在各个城门的门洞里挤成一团，每条公路上都有弃婴在号哭，在死去……
